How to Customize Lid Close Action and Settings on Windows 10

Window 10 gives four different preferences to customize the closing lid: Sleep, Hibernate, Do Nothing, and the last one is the Shut Down option. These preferences work on both the device states be it on battery or Plugged in the state. One can customize and make changes using power options.

Below are the mentioned guidelines to customize closing lid settings directly on your Windows 10:


Customizing Closing Lid Settings via Taskbar

  • First and foremost, launch the “Power Options” Window on your device. To do so, enter “power plan” into the Cortana search bar followed by the Enter key.
  • Once the list appears, then hit the best matched “Choose a power plan” option.
  • After that, go to the next page and then hit the option relevant for closing the lid by navigating to the left-hand side section.
  • Then, the last settings will appear on your screen.
  • After a while, a pull-drop option will appear having two different columns “On Battery” and “Plugged In” related to the closing of the lid. Each column section comprises four different options: Sleep, Hibernate, Do Nothing and Shut Down.
  • Now, you have to choose your option from the available pull drop menu located just after the option “When I Close the lid.”
  • After making customizations, ensure to have tapped the Save Changes option there to register your choice.

Customizing Closing Lid Settings via Advanced Power Options

  • You have to navigate to the section containing Advanced Power options. To do so, pursue Step 1 from the earlier method.
  • Then, hit the option “Change Plan Settings” available in the power options pane. This option is located just beside the functional plan.
  • After that, press the Advanced Power Settings link located at the lowermost section of the display.
  • Next, a new window will appear, and then you have to search for the option “Power Buttons and Lid.” Then apply double click on it to launch the page.
  • Now, apply double click on the button “Lid Close Action” to expand other related features.
  • Then, tap the option “On Battery” and locate the pull drop menu there with some preferences. Select the desired as per the requirement and compatibility and press the Continue tab for the option “Plugged In.”
  • Once you have performed all the guidelines mentioned above, then hit the OK button located at the lowermost section of the box. Once the selected option or action is saved successfully, then you can exit from the expanded window.

Customizing Closing Lid Settings via Command Prompt for the Current Power Plan

  • Go to the Cortana search box and enter “Command Prompt” followed by the Enter key.
  • Then, results will be followed in lists, and you have to select the best-matched option.
  • Once you reached the page of Command Prompt, apply copy-paste or type the command:

For On Battery:

“powercfg//setdcvalueindex-SCHEME-CURRENT_4f971e89/eebd/4455/a8de/9e59040e734//5ca83367_6e45-459f-a27b/476b1d01c936.”

For Plugged In:

SCHEME//CURRENT_4f971e89_eebd/4455/a8de/9e59040e7347/5ca83367/6e45/459f/a27b/476b1d01c936.”

Note: users need to replace the letter “X” to the desired value for the relevant option and make sure to hit the “Enter” key after typing each command.

For “Do Nothing,” “Shut Down,” and “Hibernate”

Enter the following path for all the above commands: “powercfg/SetActive//SCHEME-CURRENT.”


Customizing Closing Lid Settings via Command Prompt for Specific Power Plans

  • Launch the Command window by hitting the Enter the keywords “cmd” into the Cortana search bar followed by tapping the enter key.
  • Then, enter the command to know the secured GUID digits.

“powercfg_L”

Note: The sign of the asterisk located just after these GUID digits indicates the currently used power plan.

  • Now, enter the command for the respective option that you desire to modify.

For On Battery:

“powercfg//setdcvalueindex_GUID_4f971e89/eebd/4455/a8de/9e59040e734_5ca83367_6e45_459f_a27b_476b1d01c936_X.”

For Plugged In:

“powercfg//setacvalueindex_GUI//4f971e89/eebd/4455/a8de/9e59040e7347_5ca83367_6e45_459f_a27b/476b1d01c936/X.”

  • You have to replace the letters “GUID” to the numbers of GUID of your respective power plans as per your choice.
  • Modify and replace “X” into the value of your desired option number.

For “Do Nothing,” Sleep,” “Shut Down,” and “Hibernate”To register your selected option to the device, enter the following command followed by the Enter key:

“powercfg//SetActive//GUID.”

Now, replace the letters of GUID with the actual numbers that you get from point 2.

Finally, reboot the device and then make sure that the Closing Lid Settings is successfully customized.
