Man Rescued After A Month Lost At Sea: ‘It Was A Nice Break’

Two men from the Solomon Islands spent 29 days adrift, surviving on fruit and rainwater, after their boat got caught.

Two men who were who were rescued after being lost in the deep sea for 29 days being able to survive on coconuts and citrus and had an interesting -and somewhat relatableview of the situation.

"I did not know what was happening while I was there," Livae Nanjikana revealed to The Guardian. "I did not hear anything about Covid or any other news. I'm excited to go back to my home, but it was nice to be away of everything."

Nanjikana and Junior Qoloni have been saved earlier this month, about 250 miles from the coastline in Papua New Guinea, Agence France-Presse said..

The two were travelling in the Solomon Sea on a 23-foot motorboat when they encountered the stormy weather which drove them into the ocean and their GPS battery failed. They first ate the oranges they brought. Then, they lived with rainwater that they collected floating coconuts that they pulled from the sea, "and our faith in God since we pray all throughout the day and night," Nanjikana told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation.

With the amount of fuel decreasing and the fuel shortage, they eventually managed to make use of paddles and canvas to build a the mast as well as a sail. The wind carried them along the general direction towards Papua New Guinea and they were able to catch the attention of fishermen.

They are staying with the locals resident in Papua New Guinea while officials plan to bring them back to their homes, Mary Walenenea of the Solomon Islands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade said to The Guardian.
