North Carolina Lt. Gov. Refuses To Resign After Calling LGBTQ Community ‘Filth’

Republican Mark Robinson said he's "tired of folks on the right being demonized for our speech ..."

Mark Robinson, North Carolina's Republican lieutenant governor, rebuffed a request from the governor's office on Friday following the revelation that the videotape he appeared on showed him in which he called people in members of the LGBTQ LGBTQ community "filth."

Robinson stated that he was adamant about his homophobic remarks and claimed to Raleigh NBC affiliate WRAL that the right-wing views of WRAL were getting "demonized."

"We won't be intimidated. We will not relent. We won't change how we communicate," he said. "The language I spoke was not something I'm ashamed of it. I'll continue to use it in the future, because there is the right time for parents in this state to take a an oath in support of their kids."

Robinson made the offensive comments when he spoke during June in the Asbury Baptist Church in the Seagrove town. Seagrove.

"I'm declaring this right today, and I've been saying itfor a long time, regardless of about who is in support of it: These issues are not appropriate in the classroom. There's absolutely no reason why anyone on the planet in America should be telling a child about homosexuality, transgenderism -- or any of that dirt," he said in an address at the church.

Robinson said "And Yes, indeed I said it was filth. And if you don't agree with the fact that I called it filth, please come to me and I'll be able to explain it to you."

Following the video's release the previous day, Democratic senator from the state of Washington. Jeff Jackson called for Robinson to step down and said that such "open disparity" will be "completely inadmissible."

In calling a large portion of your constituents "filth" implies that you don't intend on representing them.

Our Lieutenant. Governor should step down and let anyone who is willing for the job replace him.

An aide of Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper also released a statement, calling the comments " abhorrent."

"North Carolina's a friendly state, where we are proud of an education for everyone and the variety of population. It's a travesty to listen to anyone, especially an elected official use insulting language that hurts others and the image of our state," said spokesperson Jordan Monaghan.

Robinson stated to WRAL this Friday, that Governor Brown's view " made no difference in any way."

"I am sick of people who are on the right getting slammed because of our political views," he said, declaring the "folks from the left beat and rob, take loot,- - take over entire cities and then get an exemption."

Robinson said that he wasn't speaking in the church's capacity as an official in the public sector. However, he stated it was because "homosexuality or transgenderism" are "against the principles of my faith" and should not be taught in public schools.

The video was shared on Twitter via Right Wing Watch, part of the group of progressive activists People for the American Way.

Gov. Mark Robinson says Christians must be in charge of public schools since children are being mistreated by being exposed to "filth": "There's no reason that anyone across America should be educating any child about transgenderismor homosexuality, or any other filth." pic.twitter.com/aXjCPFKTs0

Robinson's remarks were "literally risky" for people who belong to members of the LGBTQ group, Allison Scott, director of innovation and impact at the Campaign for Southern Equality, said to WRAL.

"Whether that's his intention or not, it's his words which are portraying the idea that we, as a whole, ought to not exist. There are real effects on phrases, but the most significant effects are the damage and harm that people suffer," Scott warned.

The spokesperson of Robinson first tried to soften his comments declaring they "referred towards education."

"Topics related to homosexuality and transgenderism should be addressed at home , and not in public schools," spokesperson John Wesley Waugh wrote in an email sent to WRAL. "We must concentrate on writing, reading, and maths for North Carolina."

Waugh said that Robinson "affirms each person's constitutional right to identify their identity in any way they choose."
