Republic Flight Makes Emergency Landing In NY After Passenger’s ‘Erratic Behavior’

Passengers and crew were safely removed in a "precautionary evacuation," said a statement by the airline.

An Republic Airways flight made an emergency landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport Saturday afternoon after an " security incident" incident involving a passenger's behaviour towards the conclusion on the plane.

The Port Authority spokesman told The New York Times that the man who was not identified's " suspicious and erratic behavior" has led others to notify the pilot. There was no further information given.

The passenger was arrested in a statement issued by Republic. The man was being shackled by law enforcement officers face down with arms spread out before him on a taxiway shortly after the plane had landed.



All 82 crew members and passengers have been safely removed. There were no injuries reported.

American Flight 4817 took off from Indianapolis earlier in the afternoon. It was scheduled to arrive at LaGuardia.

The passenger who was on the flight, Fawad Khan reported to The Times the chaos broke out on the plane as it touched down and a person behind him shouted at passengers to leave immediately.

Khulia claimed he heard someone who claimed that a man was using an "suspicious machine."

"People were in a panic and were being pushed into the ground," he told the Times. "The slide opened and I leapt out. There were people sliding down and rolling towards the bottom. It was quite crazy."

He saw the man slapped by emergency response personnel. He told reporters that a woman along with him is "telling that he shouldn't do that."

An announcement from Republic said that the plane "declared an emergency, and then landed in the NYC's LaGuardia Airport without incident as a result of passenger behavior towards the close that flight." The aircraft landed departed the runway in active use it stopped at a taxiway. Passengers and crew were evacuated as the course of a "precautionary evacuation in case of" the statement said.

"Our team was able to respond to the incident as per our procedure and with professionalism and commitment to the safety of everyone on board. First responders and law enforcement arrived on the scene and the person who was involved in the incident was arrested."

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Twitter Saturday night that a person was arrested and that "there there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that there is any risk for the New Yorkers."
